The country in brief
The United States, 335 million people, leaves family law to the fifty states: no-fault divorce exists everywhere, nine states apply community property and the rest equitable distribution, and marriage ages, custody rules and cohabitation rights vary widely. Same-sex marriage has been nationwide since Obergefell (2015), protected by the Respect for Marriage Act 2022.
Since the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision of 2022, abortion is banned or severely restricted in about a third of the states and protected in others; contraception, domestic violence law (the Violence Against Women Act) and data protection (a patchwork led by California) also differ by state.
