The country in brief
The United Kingdom, 68 million people, has three legal systems; in England and Wales marriage is open to same-sex couples since 2014 and civil partnership to everyone since 2019, the minimum age rose to 18 in 2023, divorce has been no-fault since April 2022, and the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 built on the 2015 offence of coercive control. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own, broadly similar, rules.
Abortion is available up to 24 weeks under the Abortion Act 1967 in Great Britain and since 2019 in Northern Ireland, and in 2025 the House of Commons voted to decriminalise women who end their own pregnancies; the Online Safety Act 2023 and UK GDPR govern the digital side.
