The context
A country with very large diaspora communities and long experience of binational couples. The obstacle is almost never the ceremony — it is the immigration route before and after it.
Entering the country
Depending on nationality, a standard visitor visa is needed, or entry is visa-free. A visitor may not marry: if that is the plan, a marriage visitor visa is the correct route. Applying for the wrong one is a common and costly mistake.
Marrying, and having it recognised
Notice is given at a register office; where one party is subject to immigration control, notice must be given at a designated office and may be referred to the Home Office for a longer notice period. The sponsor of a partner visa must meet a minimum income requirement, raised from £18,600 to £29,000 in April 2024 for new applicants; the further increase to £38,700 that was announced has been paused. Transitional protection at £18,600 applies to people already on the partner route with the same partner before 11 April 2024. Check the current figure before setting a date.
Getting there
London is one of the best-connected cities in the world, with direct flights from almost everywhere. Fares peak in July and August and around school holidays.

Points to watch
- The spouse visa income requirement rose sharply in 2024 and has remained under review since. Check the figure in force before building any plan around it — it is the single most decisive number.
- Sham-marriage referrals extend the notice period. Documented history of the relationship settles most cases.
- English language and financial evidence are examined closely at each stage, including extension and settlement.
Two absolute prohibitions, wherever you live
Sex tourism and any relationship with a minor are punished here as everywhere, and your own country's law follows you abroad. For sexual offences against a child, almost every state sets aside dual criminality and dispenses with any complaint: you can be prosecuted and tried at home whatever the local law says and whatever the local authorities do. If you met online
The warning signs are the same everywhere: a very fast escalation, a systematic refusal of video, a request for money for an urgent reason, pressure to leave the platform. The rule holds here as anywhere: you do not send money to someone you have never met face to face. Someone genuine will happily take a video call, meet in a public place and introduce you to their family.
