The country in brief
Nigeria, 220 million people, has three marriage systems — statutory under the Marriage Act (monogamous), customary (polygamous) and Islamic, with Sharia courts in twelve northern states — and a Child Rights Act 2003 setting the marriage age at 18 that not every state has adopted. The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 created protection orders, applied unevenly across the federation.
Abortion is a crime except to save the woman's life, the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act 2014 criminalises same-sex unions and their celebration, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 created a data protection commission.
