The country in brief
Ireland, 5.3 million people, transformed its family law by referendum: divorce in 1995 (and a shorter two-year separation since 2019), marriage equality in 2015 and the repeal of the abortion ban in 2018. Cohabiting couples gained redress rights in 2010, the Domestic Violence Act 2018 criminalised coercive control, and the Children and Family Relationships Act 2015 modernised parentage and guardianship.
Abortion is available on request up to twelve weeks and free of charge, contraception is free from 17 to 35, and the Data Protection Commission is one of Europe's most active regulators because so many technology companies are based in Dublin.
