The legal framework
The Abortion Legislation Act 2020 took abortion out of the Crimes Act and made it a health issue. It is available on request up to 20 weeks; after that, a qualified health practitioner must reasonably believe the abortion is clinically appropriate, having consulted at least one other practitioner.

The 2020 reform also removed the requirement for two certifying consultants, which had been the main source of delay under the previous law.

Worth knowing
Because a person of any age can consent, under-16s do not need a parent's permission — a point worth knowing for young people who fear being found out. New Zealand is unusual in having removed abortion from the criminal law altogether, which changes the clinician's obligations rather than yours.
