Synastry: zodiac sign compatibility

In astrology, comparing two birth charts is called synastry — a playful way of imagining how a couple works.

The full love compatibility test crosses the zodiac signs with the Chinese signs, biorhythms, name numerology and three other readings, from two first names and two dates of birth.

What synastry is

Synastry lays two birth charts over each other to see how the planets interact — one person's Moon touching the other's Sun, for example, is traditionally read as instant attraction. It is not limited to couples: the same method is applied to friendships, families and working relationships.

Affinities by element

Two signs of the same element tend to understand each other instinctively, but may lack the friction that keeps a relationship alive; opposite elements demand more adjustment, which says nothing about whether the relationship will last.

What to take from it

No combination of signs is better or worse in practice. The quality of a relationship depends on communication, respect and the effort both people put in — far more than on where the planets were when they were born. Synastry is an entertaining lens, not a forecast.

Frequently asked questions

Do astrological compatibilities work?

Studies comparing the signs of married and divorced couples, on samples of tens of thousands of people, have found no correlation. What is measurable is the effect of the belief: a couple convinced they are compatible reads their disagreements more generously.

Why do some combinations seem so obvious?

Because couple descriptions in astrology are built to work both ways: two signs of the same element “understand each other”, two opposite signs “complete each other”, and two signs in square “sharpen each other”. No combination is described as simply incompatible, which makes the system unfalsifiable — and therefore untestable.

Can it be used harmlessly?

As a way into a conversation about what each of you wants, yes: talking about your need for independence or for security is easier when you approach it indirectly. The harm starts when someone is ruled out on the strength of a birth date alone, or when hurtful behaviour is excused with “that's just their sign”.
