The country in brief
Zambia, 20 million people, has a dual marriage system — statutory marriages under the Marriage Act, monogamous and now at 18 since the Children's Code Act 2022 banned child marriage, and customary marriages, potentially polygamous — with the Matrimonial Causes Act 2007 governing divorce and the Anti-Gender-Based Violence Act 2011 providing protection orders and shelters.
The Termination of Pregnancy Act 1972 is one of the most permissive on paper in Africa, allowing abortion on health and socio-economic grounds with three doctors' signatures — a condition few clinics can meet —, same-sex relations remain criminalised, and the Data Protection Act 2021 created a data commissioner.
