The country in brief
Uganda, 48 million people, regulates marriage under separate acts for civil, Christian, Hindu, Islamic and customary unions, with a minimum age of 18 in the Constitution, and reformed the Succession Act in 2022 to guarantee the surviving spouse a share of the estate. The Domestic Violence Act 2010 provides protection orders and the Children Act governs custody.
Abortion is illegal except to save the woman's life, the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 imposes some of the world's harshest penalties, and the Data Protection and Privacy Act 2019 created a data protection office. The pages below set out the Ugandan rule for each theme, the procedures in the family courts and the services in Kampala and the districts.
