The country in brief
New Zealand, 5.3 million people, applies one of the most egalitarian family law systems: the Property (Relationships) Act 1976 divides property equally after three years of marriage, civil union or de facto relationship, the Care of Children Act 2004 governs parenting, same-sex marriage has been legal since 2013 and the Family Violence Act 2018 provides protection orders and police safety orders.
Abortion was removed from the Crimes Act in 2020 and is available on request up to 20 weeks, contraception is subsidised, and the Privacy Act 2020 governs personal data.
