Moon cycles

The Moon unquestionably drives the tides. On births, sleep and mood, the evidence is far thinner.

A cycle of 29 and a half days

The Moon takes about 29.5 days to complete a full cycle of phases, from one new moon to the next. Four stages punctuate it: the new moon (invisible, traditionally linked to beginnings and intentions), the first quarter (growth, action), the full moon (culmination, revelation) and the last quarter (review, letting go).

What tradition makes of it

Lunar gardening, new-moon rituals and haircuts timed to the waxing moon all rest on this cycle. The Moon also plays a central role in astrology: in a birth chart it stands for emotions and inner needs, and its sign is considered as telling as the sun sign.

You will also come across the "black moon" (Lilith), which is not a body at all but a calculated point of the orbit, and the "blue moon" — a second full moon within a calendar month, purely an artefact of our calendar.

And the evidence?

The Moon's physical influence is real and measurable: tides. The claim that it affects births, psychiatric crises, accidents or crime has been tested repeatedly on very large datasets without any robust effect emerging. On sleep, a handful of studies suggest a small effect, but results remain contested and poorly replicated.

Why does the belief persist? Mostly confirmation bias: a restless night during a full moon gets noticed and retold, while identical nights the rest of the month pass unremarked. The full moon is also the only phase everyone recognises at a glance.

A rhythm, not a law

Plenty of people enjoy setting intentions or reviewing the month against the lunar phases. That is a pleasant timekeeping ritual, much like seasons or new year — its usefulness lies in the habit, not in the Moon.

Your natal Moon

The sign the Moon occupied when you were born is, for astrologers, the first thing to look at in love: it describes what you need to feel loved. The Moon and Venus in love explains what tradition reads in it and how two charts are compared; the birth chart calculates your Moon from your date, time and place of birth.

Try it for two

These compatibility readings — zodiac signs, Chinese signs, Vedic astrology, biorhythms, first names, life path — are gathered and calculated for two people on the Love compatibility page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the moon affect sleep?

Several studies have reported slightly shorter and later sleep in the nights before a full moon, and others have failed to replicate it. If there is an effect, it is small — a matter of minutes — and far below the influence of screens, caffeine, stress and room temperature. Treat the moon as the least likely explanation for a bad night.

Is there a link with menstrual cycles?

The two have similar average lengths, which is where the idea comes from, but large datasets show no synchronisation with lunar phase for most people. Individual cycles vary in length from month to month, which alone produces occasional coincidences.

Why is the belief so persistent?

Because it is memorable and checkable in the wrong way: you notice the restless night that falls on a full moon and forget the twenty-nine others. Emergency departments and police forces have studied their own records repeatedly and found no lunar pattern, which has not made the belief any less widespread among their staff.
