What a birth chart is
A natal chart is a diagram of the sky as it stood at the exact moment and place of a birth. The circle is divided into twelve sectors, and the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets are plotted on it.
Three layers structure the traditional reading: the planets (what acts), the signs (how it is expressed) and the houses (the area of life involved) — plus the aspects, the angles planets form with one another.

The twelve houses
Houses map onto areas of life, in traditional order: I identity and appearance (the house of the ascendant), II money and resources, III communication and immediate circle, IV home and roots, V creativity and romance, VI daily work and health, VII partnership, VIII transformation and inheritance, IX travel and knowledge, X career and reputation, XI friendships and collective projects, XII inner life and the unconscious.
Aspects
A conjunction (0°) blends two energies; an opposition (180°) sets them against each other; a square (90°) creates friction; trines (120°) and sextiles (60°) are read as harmonious. In the tradition, an "easy" chart is not necessarily an enviable one: tension is what is said to drive growth.
Where to start
Begin with the Sun–Moon–Ascendant trio, which already carries most of the traditional portrait. Then look at where the planets cluster: a chart weighted towards houses X and XI is read very differently from one centred on IV and XII.
A reminder
No controlled research has found any correspondence between planetary positions at birth and personality or life events. A birth chart is a symbolic prompt for reflection, never a diagnosis or a basis for decisions.
