The regime that applies
Many nationalities travel under the visa waiver programme with an ESTA authorisation obtained online before departure; others need a B-2 visitor visa, which requires an interview at a consulate and often a long wait for an appointment. Check which applies to your passport, and note that the waiver programme excludes anyone who has travelled to certain countries since 2011.
Immigrant intent: the trap that lasts
US law presumes every visitor intends to immigrate, and it is for the applicant to rebut that. Entering as a visitor while planning to stay, marry and adjust status is treated as misrepresentation — and a finding of misrepresentation carries bars on re-entry that can last years or be permanent.
Officers at the border can and do read phones. Be straightforward about the purpose of the trip: visiting a partner is entirely legitimate, provided the intention is to leave.
What the visitor application turns on
Ties to the home country above all: employment, property, family responsibilities, previous travel respected. Evidence of funds and of accommodation. A refusal under section 214(b) — failure to demonstrate non-immigrant intent — is the standard outcome and cannot be appealed; you may reapply, but nothing changes unless the circumstances have.
Health and money
No vaccinations required. Travel insurance is essential: there is no public health system for visitors and an emergency admission runs into tens of thousands of dollars. Tipping of eighteen to twenty-two per cent is expected in restaurants and is part of staff income; sales tax is added at the till and varies by state.
Three rules that hold for every destination
- Use the official portal. Sites that "facilitate", "expedite" or "check" a visa charge for a service the state does not require, and collect your identity documents on the way. The official site is always cheaper and usually faster.
- A visa is not a right of entry. It is permission to present yourself at the border; the officer there decides. Carry the return ticket, the address of your stay and evidence of funds.
- Read your own foreign ministry's travel advice before booking, not after. It conditions your insurance and your consulate's ability to help.
The passport comes first
The commonest reason for being refused boarding is not the visa but the passport: insufficient validity beyond the return date, no free pages, a damaged document. Check it the day you decide to travel, not the week you leave — a renewal takes weeks.
