The country in brief
Malaysia, 34 million people, runs two parallel family law systems: the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 for non-Muslims, monogamous and heard in the civil courts, and Islamic law for Muslims, administered by the state Syariah courts, which allow polygamy and govern divorce, custody and inheritance. Conversion of one spouse to Islam has produced the country's most contested custody cases.
Abortion is permitted only to protect the woman's life or physical or mental health, same-sex relations are criminalised under both systems, and the Domestic Violence Act 1994 and the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 apply to everyone.
