The country in brief
Hong Kong, 7.5 million people, keeps a common-law system under the Basic Law: monogamous marriage under the Marriage Ordinance, divorce after one year of marriage under the Matrimonial Causes Ordinance, and property division guided by the Court of Final Appeal's 2010 principles. In 2023 that court ordered the government to create a legal framework recognising same-sex partnerships; the bill was rejected by the Legislative Council in 2025 and the question remained open in 2026.
Abortion is available up to 24 weeks with two doctors' approval, contraception is widely accessible through the Family Planning Association, and the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance governs data.
