The legal framework
Pakistan has no legal framework for unmarried cohabitation. Marriage by nikah is the only recognised relationship, and cohabitation outside marriage carries social and, in some circumstances, legal risk. The Protection of Women (Criminal Laws Amendment) Act 2006 substantially narrowed the previous zina provisions, but the absence of any status for cohabitants is complete. Same-sex relationships are criminalised.

In practice
- Put contributions in writing and register co-ownership properly.
- Make a will — this is the single most important step for an unmarried couple.
- Grant powers of attorney for health and financial decisions; without them a partner has no standing.
- Name each other as beneficiaries on insurance and retirement savings, where permitted.
- Register any marriage properly: an unregistered nikah leaves both partners exposed.
- Keep documentation of the relationship and of the children's births.

Wills and agreements cost relatively little; the cost of not having them can be everything.
Recent changes
Reform debates exist in several of these jurisdictions, but change has been slow and, where it has come, has been driven by litigation rather than legislation.

Where cohabitation is socially or legally sensitive, documents should be kept somewhere safe and accessible — a will that cannot be found does nothing. Beyond the absence of rights, cohabitation carries real legal risk. Legal advice before any dispute becomes public is essential.
