The regime that applies
Most visa-waiver nationalities need an electronic travel authority obtained before departure, along with a visitor levy; others apply for a visitor visa. A dedicated partner of a New Zealander visitor visa exists and allows longer stays — it is the right route for a couple, and it requires evidence of the relationship from the outset.
Biosecurity
As strict as Australia's, for the same reason: an isolated ecosystem with no natural defences. Food, plant material, hiking boots with soil on them and wooden items must all be declared. Declaring is free; failing to declare attracts an immediate fine. Clean your walking boots before packing them — this is checked.
Health and practicalities
No vaccinations required. Visitors are not covered for illness and need insurance, although the accident compensation scheme covers everyone, including visitors, for injury — a genuine peculiarity that also means there is no right to sue for personal injury. The sun is fierce: the ozone layer is thinner here than almost anywhere.
Staying longer
Visitor stays are limited and extensions are possible but not automatic. A partner-based work or resident visa is applied for separately, and the criteria are strict — see the marriage page.
Three rules that hold for every destination
- Use the official portal. Sites that "facilitate", "expedite" or "check" a visa charge for a service the state does not require, and collect your identity documents on the way. The official site is always cheaper and usually faster.
- A visa is not a right of entry. It is permission to present yourself at the border; the officer there decides. Carry the return ticket, the address of your stay and evidence of funds.
- Read your own foreign ministry's travel advice before booking, not after. It conditions your insurance and your consulate's ability to help.
The passport comes first
The commonest reason for being refused boarding is not the visa but the passport: insufficient validity beyond the return date, no free pages, a damaged document. Check it the day you decide to travel, not the week you leave — a renewal takes weeks.
