The regime that applies
A visa is required for most nationalities, obtained before travel; Ghana has been moving to an online system and has announced visa-free entry for African passport holders. Verify the current arrangement on the official immigration service portal — this has changed more than once recently. ECOWAS citizens enter without a visa.
A family visit requires an invitation with the host's identification and address. Passport validity of six months beyond arrival is required.
Yellow fever, compulsory and checked
The yellow fever certificate is mandatory and verified at Accra on arrival; without it you will be vaccinated at the airport or refused. It must be at least ten days old. Malaria is intense and year-round; prophylaxis and mosquito protection both matter. Typhoid, hepatitis A and routine boosters are advised.
Arrival and practicalities
Kotoka airport in Accra is modern and the formalities are straightforward. Arrange a pickup. Ghana is among the safest countries in the region and ordinary urban precautions suffice; take advice on the far north near the Burkina Faso border, which is subject to restrictive advisories.
The Year of Return and after
Ghana has actively invited the African diaspora to visit and settle, with commemorative programmes and a route to citizenship for some. For couples where one partner is of African descent from the Americas or Europe, this has a practical dimension worth exploring rather than a merely symbolic one.
Three rules that hold for every destination
- Use the official portal. Sites that "facilitate", "expedite" or "check" a visa charge for a service the state does not require, and collect your identity documents on the way. The official site is always cheaper and usually faster.
- A visa is not a right of entry. It is permission to present yourself at the border; the officer there decides. Carry the return ticket, the address of your stay and evidence of funds.
- Read your own foreign ministry's travel advice before booking, not after. It conditions your insurance and your consulate's ability to help.
The passport comes first
The commonest reason for being refused boarding is not the visa but the passport: insufficient validity beyond the return date, no free pages, a damaged document. Check it the day you decide to travel, not the week you leave — a renewal takes weeks.
