The news in brief
The NICD reports continued local transmission. Its dated count is a surveillance snapshot, not an estimate of any individual's risk.
The NICD dashboard records 26 laboratory-confirmed cases from the start of the year to 28 October 2026. Most of the reported cases were linked to local transmission. This updates the earlier September statement, and the figure should always be read with its reporting date (Mpox Dashboard, data to 28 October 2026).
The health department's advice remains practical. Seek health care for a suspicious rash or other compatible symptoms, tell the clinician if you have been in contact with a suspected or confirmed case, and avoid close contact if symptoms develop. Do not share bedding, towels or clothing with someone who is affected (Four new mpox cases identified in South Africa).
A reported case count does not capture every undiagnosed infection, and it cannot tell you whether a particular person is infected. The dashboard describes laboratory surveillance and continuing characterisation of the virus. The earlier news report and the later dashboard may therefore not give identical laboratory-detail totals (Mpox Dashboard, data to 28 October 2026 Four new mpox cases identified in South Africa).
